Career Opportunities - Why French at Centenary - Study Abroad - Major Requirements
The student who chooses to major in French will unlock doors to new ways of perceiving the world in which we live. A study of French entails not only the mastery of the language, but a knowledge of the history, culture, and literature of France and the Francophone world.
Americans who can communicate in French are valued both nationally and internationally. Careers in business, banking, international law, and communications abound in the U.S., France, and Africa. There is a constant need for elementary and secondary school teachers, both regionally and nationally. Students who choose to seek the doctorate will discover ample opportunities as consultants, translators, or college faculty.
Centenary French majors are encouraged to study, and when possible, to major in another discipline as well--a second degree in Business, English, Economics, or Education, for instance, significantly enhances a degree in French. (A double degree can be completed in four years.) Because of this strong formation, 100% of all recent Centenary graduates who have applied to graduate schools have been accepted and have received major awards, including complete tuition remission at the following schools: Notre-Dame, Penn State, University of California-Berkeley, Purdue, New York University, Indiana, Illinois, and LSU, and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Centenary French majors may spend a semester or year abroad at the Université catholique de Lille, in Lille, France. This complete immersion in the cultural and intellectual life of a major French university offers Centenary students a unique opportunity to perfect their French. Students pay Centenary tuition and still receive financial aid!
In addition, CODOFIL (Council on the Development of French in Louisiana) offers numerous scholarships for summer study abroad. Since 1992, more than 40 Centenary French majors and minors have been awarded CODOFIL scholarships.
