Français 395 — Literature of Francophone Africa Professeur : D. Kress Required texts: Diop, Birago,
Les Contes d’Amadou Koumba. Senegalese Newspapers: Le Soleil, Le
Sud. In this course we will concentrate on the literature of Francophone west Africa with a special emphasis on the literary production of Senegal. This domain of French literature, little studied until recently, has produced some of the richest prose and verse in modern French. We will attempt to arrive at an understanding of the ideas that shaped the literature of post colonial Africa so that we may more justly appreciate the writings produced in some the forty-one countries where French is the recognized language. Historically the thrust of French studies has tended to minimize the importance of the literature produced in the third world; today the eighty million French-speaks who live outside of France are producing much of the most vital work in the language. Recognizing the impossibility of studying the literature of every Francophone country, we will focus on a few authors whose work links our world to that of Sub-Saharan Africa.
