This is a portrait of Father Adrien-Emmanuel Rouquette,
a Louisiana Creole of the nineteenth century. He was a writer and a missionary
among the Choctaw Indians, who gave him the name Chahta-Ima, "like
a Choctaw." He wrote both in French and in English, and his works include
poetry, essays, a novel, and a Choctaw dictionary.
Our quest begins along Lacombe’s Main Street, which
will lead us deeper into the woods that Adrien Rouquette so loved. Here
we will come to a better understanding of Father Rouquette and his writings.
